ADR-006: Dashboard Skills Integration ArchitectureΒΆ

Status: Approved Date: 2026-01-24 Deciders: @cloud-architect, @product-owner Sprint: Sprint 7 (Session 1) Constitutional Compliance: CHK009 (MCP Interoperability), CHK051 (Prompt Design)

ContextΒΆ

Sprint 6 successfully implemented the ITSM Dashboard with: - data_loader.py (398 LOC): Pydantic models + PII masking - charts.py (522 LOC): Vizro @capture decorator patterns - app.py (264 LOC): Multi-page dashboard with 4 KPIs + 8 charts - test_tier1.py (396 LOC): 100% test coverage (33 tests passing)

Phase 6.5 Achievement: FinOps commands (/finops:azure-monthly, /finops:aws-monthly) gained chart generation capability via Phase 6.5 integration in azure-monthly.md and aws-monthly.md.

Gap: Dashboard patterns are isolated in dashboards/itsm/ and not reusable across other FinOps/CloudOps use cases. To enable rapid dashboard creation for cost analysis, SLO monitoring, and multi-cloud analytics, we need to extract these patterns into a dashboard skill.

DecisionΒΆ

Create .claude/skills/dashboards/finops-cost-dashboard/SKILL.md as a reusable skill package integrating: 1. Data Loading Patterns (Pydantic + PII masking + cloud provider enums) 2. Chart Patterns (@capture decorator, McKinsey Visual Vocabulary colors) 3. MCP Integration (vizro-mcp, azure-cost-management-focus, awslabs-cost-explorer) 4. Notebook Integration (Jupyter notebook for exploratory cost analysis) 5. 3-Tier Testing (Tier 1 functional tests)

This skill will be invoked by /finops:azure-monthly and /finops:aws-monthly commands to generate cost analysis dashboards.

ArchitectureΒΆ

1. Skill StructureΒΆ

4. Integration with Existing FinOps CommandsΒΆ

Before (Phase 6.5):ΒΆ

# /finops:azure-monthly

**Chart Generation**: Yes (Phase 6.5)
- Uses vizro-mcp.create_vizro_chart() inline
- Charts embedded in markdown report
- Limited to static cost trend charts

After (Sprint 7):ΒΆ

# /finops:azure-monthly

**Chart Generation**: Enhanced (Sprint 7 Dashboard Skill)
- Invokes .claude/skills/dashboards/finops-cost-dashboard/SKILL.md
- Generates interactive Vizro dashboard
- Includes:
  - 4 KPIs: Total Cost, MoM Change, Top Service, Budget Utilization
  - 8 Charts: Cost trend, service breakdown, anomaly detection, forecast
  - Data table with drill-down capability
  - Export to CSV/Excel/PDF

5. Notebook Integration PatternΒΆ

File: notebooks/finops/azure-monthly-cost-analysis.ipynb

# Cell 1: Load data using skill template
from claude.skills.dashboards.finops_cost_dashboard.templates import load_azure_cost_data

dataset = load_azure_cost_data(
    subscription_id="YOUR_SUBSCRIPTION_ID",
    start_date="2026-01-01",
    end_date="2026-01-31"
)

# Cell 2: Visualize with skill charts
from claude.skills.dashboards.finops_cost_dashboard.templates import (
    plot_cost_trend,
    plot_service_breakdown,
    plot_anomaly_detection
)

plot_cost_trend(dataset.to_dataframe())
plot_service_breakdown(dataset.to_dataframe())
plot_anomaly_detection(dataset.to_dataframe())

# Cell 3: Generate full dashboard
from claude.skills.dashboards.finops_cost_dashboard.templates import build_dashboard

dashboard = build_dashboard(dataset)
dashboard.run(port=8050)

        "cost": 123.45,
        "currency": "USD",
        "provider": "Azure"
    }
    # Act
    entry = CostEntry(**cost_data)
    # Assert

    })
    # Act
    fig = plot_cost_trend(df)
    # Assert
    assert fig is not None
    assert len(fig.data) > 0

# Test skill invocation
def test_skill_invocation():
    """Verify skill can be invoked programmatically."""
    # Arrange
    skill_path = Path(".claude/skills/dashboards/finops-cost-dashboard/SKILL.md")
    # Act
    skill_exists = skill_path.exists()
    # Assert
    assert skill_exists

Total New LOC: ~1150 LOC Reused LOC from Sprint 6: ~1180 LOC (data_loader.py + charts.py + app.py) Effective Code Reuse: ~50% reduction in development time

Constitutional ComplianceΒΆ

CHK009: MCP Interoperability StandardΒΆ

Compliance: βœ… PASS - vizro-mcp, azure-cost-management-focus, awslabs-cost-explorer integrated - Rate limiting configured (100-200 req/min) - Cross-validation β‰₯99.5% accuracy (Sprint 6 baseline)

CHK015: Evaluation-First (Test Coverage)ΒΆ

Compliance: βœ… PASS - Tier 1 functional tests: β‰₯95% coverage target - Quality gates defined (QG-SKILL-001 through QG-SKILL-004) - Evidence logging to tmp/cloud-infrastructure/

CHK027: Observability InstrumentationΒΆ

Compliance: βœ… PASS (Session 2 covers this) - MCP tool call metrics tracked - Test execution duration logged - Skill invocation counts monitored

CHK051: Prompt Design ReviewΒΆ

Compliance: βœ… PASS - Skill templates reviewed by @cloud-architect - MCP tool integration patterns validated - Examples provided for 3 use cases (Azure monthly, AWS monthly, SLO dashboard)

ConsequencesΒΆ

PositiveΒΆ

  1. Code Reuse: 50% reduction in dashboard development time (reuse data_loader + charts patterns)
  2. Consistency: All dashboards follow ADLC chart-patterns.md (McKinsey Visual Vocabulary)
  3. MCP Integration: Centralized vizro-mcp usage reduces tool call duplication
  4. Skill Catalog: Enables rapid dashboard creation for new use cases (SLO monitoring, security analytics)
  5. Notebook Integration: Data scientists can use templates for exploratory analysis

NegativeΒΆ

  1. Abstraction Overhead: Skill adds one layer of indirection (acceptable for 3+ use cases)
  2. Template Maintenance: Changes to Pydantic models require template updates
  3. MCP Dependency: Requires vizro-mcp server running (already required for Phase 6.5)

RisksΒΆ

  1. MCP Rate Limits: Risk = LOW, Mitigation = Implement exponential backoff + caching
  2. Template Drift: Risk = MEDIUM, Mitigation = Automated template sync tests in CI
  3. Skill Discovery: Risk = LOW, Mitigation = Document in .claude/skills/README.md

Alternatives ConsideredΒΆ

Alternative 1: Inline Dashboard Code in Each CommandΒΆ

Rejected: Violates DRY principle, results in 3x code duplication across /finops:azure-monthly, /finops:aws-monthly, /cloudops:slo-dashboard.

Alternative 2: Python Package (PyPI)ΒΆ

Rejected: Overkill for internal tooling, skill approach provides better ADLC integration.

Alternative 3: Vizro-AI GenerationΒΆ

Rejected: Vizro-AI superseded by vizro-mcp (v0.4.0+), MCP approach provides better control and consistency.
